How To See Rome in 48 Hours

The Colosseum, Vatican, and Trevi fountain are a few of the popular destinations in Rome. There are countless others and it may seem daunting, but there is a way to see the sights of Rome in 48 hours. Out of all the places I visited when I studied abroad, Rome was the only city I wasn't sure I would get to see all of. My friend and I sat down and planned every bucket-list site and museum we wanted to see over the weekend. While it might not be ideal for some to wake up at 7 am and go until 10:30 pm, this schedule I am going to share with you all will give a detailed account of how everything can be seen in 48 hours. Believe me, if we did it so can you

I recommend going to the Vatican first. It opens at 9 am but the lines can be brutally long unless you have an ICOMOS pass to get in free. Only students in Europe are allowed to buy those so if you are not studying in Europe, I recommend getting to the Vatican before it opens to beat the line to buy your ticket and grab a pastry for breakfast near the Vatican. After touring, you can choose to walk, Uber, or take public transportation to go further into Vatican City. Once there, you will be near many other sites. St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Peter’s Square, the garden in the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, and Castel Sant’Angelo. Along the way from the Vatican, I recommend stopping for a quick bite of pasta or pizza. Bonci Pizzarium is near the Vatican and has amazing pizza but if you are craving something different, there are numerous pastry shops lining the streets. The chapels and Basilica are gorgeous. An hour or less in them is honestly plenty and you will still have an immersive experience. The most time consuming part of the day is the Vatican because of how large it is. After finishing up touring the chapels and Basilica, there is one last stop for the day: The Colosseum. It is a far walk so I recommend either taking public transportation or an uber to get there. The final group allowed in is at 6:15 pm which means after touring The Colosseum, it’s time for dinner! There is an amazing Italian restaurant nearby called Divinostilia food & wine bar. Then you have the entire evening to rest up or go out!

Day two is much more relaxing. This day is mapped out so you will be able to

comfortably walk to each site without having to race around the city. To begin the day, I recommend eating breakfast at a cafe and then going to the Spanish steps since it is the furthest away. Then, there is a street called Via Del Corso that is known for its shops and beauty. This street is a must see so I suggest walking from the Steps, through Via Del Corso, and then stopping by Chiesa di Sant’ Ignazio di Loyola. This is a catholic church that has been there since the 17th century and has stunning paintings inside. The next stop should be lunch as you are heading towards the Trevi fountain. The Trevi fountain is likely to be packed so be ready to work your way around a crowd. After the Trevi Fountain, grab Gelato for a midday treat and walk over to the Pantheon. The final stop of the day is the Piazza Navona. This isn’t as important to see but it is a beautiful piazza with many shops and restaurants all around. This is a great place to find dinner or to take a stroll.

The itinerary above might seem overwhelming, but I guarantee that it is still efficient and enjoyable. This was just my personal schedule with my travel companions while I was in Rome and it can easily be modified to accommodate different plans. One weekend is a short amount of time to see everything, but having this schedule helped us get the most out of our trip. We were able to meet new people along the way and see other sites by simply walking around. I hope this schedule shows that despite travel planning being difficult, it has a greater personal reward in the end. This includes self-discovery, learning of other cultures, and expanding your knowledge. Writing this itinerary reminded me of countless memories I treasure and I personally believe I was in Rome for the perfect amount of time due to this schedule. This vacation was one of my favorites and I hope my schedule helps someone else interested in a short stay in Rome.
