Flying To New Heights

Writer: baileyellingsen8baileyellingsen8

With my track record trying new gadgets, I was terrified to fly the mini drone presented to me in class. My brother had always been the one to help me understand any sort of technology growing up and I became a little too reliant on his skills rather than learn on my own. This was my opportunity to learn with a little guidance from my professor. I learned quite a bit from my short amount of time flying the drone and am shocked by how quickly I mastered it. I followed the instructions to keep it in cine mode, don’t fly too close to any objects or birds, and always have someone watching the drone. After testing a few camera shots, I was able to understand how beneficial drone shots are for various media projects.

The drone could change the perspective of my media projects by providing a more detailed overview at the beginning of a story. If I were writing a story about a certain organization in a building, I could use the drone to hover above the building and slowly turn it to scan over the building. That would provide a better introduction or overview of what is to come in the story. With my particular stories I am covering in this class, I don’t necessarily need any drone shots to get my message across but the skills I learned will benefit me later on in life. As a Communication major, I will likely need to know how to capture drone shots for future projects in other Communication classes and in my career after Furman. This was one of the more enjoyable learning opportunities I have had as a Communication major and I am excited to see what other skills I will learn down the road.
