The visual storyboard was one of my favorite creative assignments for Digital Storytelling. The photography, editing, and storyline throughout the weekend was exciting to watch unfold in each image. During Homecoming weekend itself, I was focused on enjoying my experience while capturing the energy I felt in photographs. There was an aura of excitement and nerves as students and alumni all gathered together for a Homecoming celebration. I was used to a Furman Homecoming and getting to experience a large state school’s Homecoming weekend made me be able to be aware of what images I wanted to capture.
Day one started with merchandise shopping and seeing all of the decorations being displayed in preparation for the main event: the football game. Stores were overflowing with families, alumni, visitors, and students buying all of the red and white clothing items possible. I decided to photograph the clothing people wear to the football games and an example of the school decorations setup. Day two I wanted to document each major event: the university breakfast, the tailgate, the football game, and the halftime performance. On day three I documented the football stadium deserted with a few final students sporting their school pride and the final sunset on the main street as a goodbye sendoff. These were all pivotal moments in telling the complete story of what the weekend entailed.
The final aspect of the storyboard was the editing process which I was nervous for. I have minimal photoshop experience and did not want to change much of the photographs I took. I utilized the tools we were taught in class to simply highlight the photographs and edit the unnecessary parts out (i.e. trash littering the ground, twigs against the wall, a fallen pole, etc.). I will use these skills in the future when capturing images for personal reasons and my future career. Being able to tell a story through images is a talent that will serve me well in life.
